The 72-year-old grandmother returns to court following groundbreaking trial made her a symbol - and tore her close-knit relatives

Initially Gisèle Pelicot climbed the entrance of the judicial center in southern France in the autumn of 2024, she was an unrecognized retired grandmother.

Within weeks, this diminutive elderly lady - the central figure at the core of the largest sexual assault case in French history, featuring multiple perpetrators comprising her spouse - had become a beacon for women's rights.

She was last seen in the public eye when the verdicts - each one convicted - were delivered in December. By that time, throngs of supporters were shouting her moniker.

This coming Monday the grandmother comes back to legal proceedings, this time in the southern city, for the appeal of the lone defendant of the fifty-one defendants to dispute his sentence: the 44-year-old, forty-four, a husband and parent of one.

The Trial Which Rocked France

Between September and December in 2024, the survivor's disturbing account spread globally. During more than a decade, she had been sedated unconscious by her partner Dominique and assaulted by multiple individuals he had solicited on digital forums.

The perpetrator captured the violations and neatly catalogued them on a digital drive, which enabled law enforcement to locate the greater part of the suspects participating. Around 20 could not be identified and remain unapprehended.

Relational Breakdown
