From Single-Parent Vacation Nightmare to House-Sitting Bliss: One Parent's Journey

Following the marriage ended, I believed holidays being a solo mother could be easy. I soon discovered they were either outrageously costly, or seemed only suitable for “conventional” families, or else were far too budget that I came back more exhausted than before I’d left.

Early Vacation Experiences

The initial attempt, tenting with friends, went well up until I had to pack up our shelter. Four hours of struggling with the tent in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Subsequently, an adventurous holiday for solo-parent families. The abseiling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunkbed wrecked my spine. We attempted a budget package on the island, but the hordes of nuclear families were overwhelming, and poolside chats with fellow ladies fizzled out because I wasn’t come with a handy partner for their spouses to chat with. A trip to Mallorca with a friend and her kids was wonderful, but the cost was eye-watering.

Finding Pet-Sitting

Later, the previous fall, an acquaintance asked if we’d look after her pets in Devon as she attended to a ceremony. For one peaceful couple of days, we walked on the beach, and settled by the fire in the evening. That led to house-sitting for her friend in the region, which also went well. Inspired, I paid an annual £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, through which, in exchange for looking after people’s animals, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a ten-day pet-sit within the county, caring for a labrador called Buzz during the time his owners were abroad.

Our daily walks gave us the chance to discover breathtaking natural settings.

It was the initial assignment for unknown individuals, but all anxiety dissipated as soon as we arrived the gorgeous spacious house and met the gentle Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Each day's canine strolls gave us the possibility to venture into magnificent nature spots, and, after we came back, we could relax outdoors for meaningful conversations about our preferred “Ghosts” characters from the television series. There were no pricey tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we perused bookshops, indulged to manicures, and embarked on kayak trips. I experienced more carefree and more joyful than ever in years, and noticed the connection alongside my child Polly deepen daily. I’m not hesitant to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed possible once more.

Could Pet-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Some people prefer zero duties during vacations other than selecting their next beverage, are not fond of pets, or perhaps feel odd about staying in a someone else’s bed, clearing the dishwasher, and putting out their bins. However the gentle rhythm of everyday living, with employment stripped out and fresh locations to investigate, suits me for me.

This prevents myself from slipping into complete idleness, a state that leaves me feeling twitchy and strangely hollow. And, financially, house-sitting is a lifeline for a single parent. Ten days break in a similar-sized house within the identical area we stayed would set me back approximately ÂŁ2,500 on Airbnb.

A New Perspective

As for residing in a stranger’s house, I discovered it nourishing. Although pet-sitting is a transaction, it is equally an act of trust between strangers and creatures, which has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured side, overflowing with appreciation for the individuals and locations we encounter. I have lined up an additional short break off, looking after a whippet in leafy Surrey, and, next year, I hope to try pet-sitting overseas. Thanks to a bit of innovative thinking, we can experience the globe from the comfort of home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
