The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
