Brave Train Employee Receives Severe Injuries Amid Multiple Stabbing Incident on Express Service

A courageous railway employee who stepped in to save passengers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has suffered life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.

Particulars of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance video reportedly depicts the employee attempting to halt the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have now been released from medical care.

A bystander filmed the individual waving a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave employee of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police official.

Labor Reaction and Calls for Measures

Train associations were swift to commend staff and call for increased action. One union leader stated he would be “requesting urgent discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and robust procedures in place”.

Another union representative urged the rail company and government “to act quickly to review safety, to help the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.

Operator Commended for Quick Action

The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He didn’t stop the train in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a union representative.

Additional Details

Police said they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness described initially wondering if the event was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from individuals' faces that it was serious.

Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.

Train services on the affected route are expected to have delays until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their travel where feasible.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation are asked to reach authorities by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
